Peanut Better Butter

I love peanut butter.  I don't let myself buy it because I will just go at the jar with a spoon.  There is something about making my own, though, that makes me want to savor it a little longer.

The best part about making peanut butter is that it doesn't have to just be peanut butter.  Yay!

So what makes this peanut butter better?  Hemp.

I don't know how well you can see that label, but 2 tbsp of hemp seed is 160 calories and 11g of protein.  Not to mention an iron boost and the profile of healthy fats.    I ordered mine online from Food Fight! grocery.  If you are wondering what they taste like...they're yummy.  They aren't really crunchy, but they are mildly sweet and nutty.

Peanut Better Butter
1 1/2 cups unsalted peanuts
2 tbsp hemp seeds
1 tsp Z-sweet (or other sweetener) (optional)
1 tsp oil (optional)
salt to taste

1.  Process peanuts until they form a ball.
2.  Break up peanut butter, add hemp seed nut and  z-sweet.
3.  Process until smooth.
4.  Add oil if necessary, and salt to taste.

Yields about 8oz.  1 serving = 2 tbsp

You really don't need any sweetener, I just wanted to add some.  If you do like it slightly sweet, but don't have Z-sweet, you can always use agave.  One tsp isn't going to add any significant calories.  If you're wondering what Z-sweet is, I did talk about it briefly last month.  It is a sugar alcohol called erythritol.  It only has 0.2 calories per gram, so the calories are basically negligible.  If you want to read about someone else's experience with it, Diann talked about it in some length yesterday.

So, everyone go forth and enjoy your nut butters!  They're good for you, and as possibly one of my favorite foods, ever.

  3. I have ALWAYS wanted to do this! Your recipe sounds fabulous! As soon as I have a blender or chopper back out of storage (once we move) I am totally making this! Thank you ;)

  4. Awesome post. You know I love anything related to nut butter! Naturally Nutty brand uses hemp and flax seeds, but I never thought of making my own. Sounds amazingly delicious, and the texture looks perfect. Glad you're putting the new food processor to good use!

  5. Wow, your hemp peanut butter sounds and looks really great! Apparently hemp is ridiculously good for you, with the perfect ratio of Omega 3 and Omega 6 acids, or so they say.

  7. Great idea! I have your same passion for peanut butter and I agree if I made my own I would be more controlled with my eating. I haven't baked any more with Z Sweet, but it seems to be more suited to non-baked recipes.

  8. Yum! I gotta get some hemp seeds. I get the hemp milk and that's pretty awesome for drnking and baking (but I don't love it in tea.)
    Homemade peanut butter is fantastic.

    Happy New Year!

  10. I've never actually tasted any hemp seeds but they sound great! I wished I weren't allergic to nuts though!

  11. Shelby, I have Vita-Mix lust also...I was so close to buying one about a year ago, and I just couldn't cough up the cash. I just made the PB in my food processor :)

Heather, that PB sounds awesome. There is some kind of "enhanced" peanut butter at my grocery store, but it has egg whites in it. Not only unnecessary, but odd, no?

Larisa, I do hope you try making your own, it is yummy! The sweetener and salt are both kind of added to taste, I like it sweet.

Erica, you sound like me, my entire kitchen has been in storage for the past 18 months, I can't wait to move and be able to take it all out again. I miss my toaster oven.

Theresa, I have heard this too! I don't know why, but I was expecting them to be gross, but they're really pretty good.

Juliet...hello! Thanks for coming by, happy new year :)

Diann, I totally agree about the Z-sweet. I used some in a bread once, and it was definitely grainy and kind of weird.

Jenn, I have never had hemp milk...they sell it at my health food store and I always contemplate it, but have yet to actually buy it. I should!

Nutritious is Delicious, they are really interesting. I should have posted a picture of the actual seeds, they don't look anything like what I expected them to.

Lovlie, I am sad for your nut allergy! Does hemp count?

  13. I'll have to try it to know. Seeds like pine nuts, pumpkin and sunflower are fine. But sesame, no. And some nuts are worse than others. So, I can only know by trying. I hope for the best! But that spread really looks yummy!

  14. Oh, that's so strange! And kind of annoying for you, maybe? Although I'm sure you get used to it :) Out of that list, I would say they're probably the closest to sesame seeds.

  15. I too am a HUGE fan of nut butters of all kinds.

I haven't heard of that sweetener but I am always wary of artificial sweeteners of any kind. Better to soak some dates and smash them to a paste if you must have some sweet, IMO

    Cheers!

  16. What a great idea! I've never thought to make my own nut butters... will have to give it a try sometime!

Thanks for stopping by to comment on my blog, too! :)

  17. Hey zucchini breath :) I tend to be pretty wary of artificial sweeteners too. But this is naturally derived sugar alcohol, which does occur naturally in fruits and other fermented foods. I don't use it very often, it just kind of worked well here, I usually use it in tea.

I usually do use dates, although for a nut butter, I would probably use agave for another type of sweetener.
